Bureaucrat appointed to serve Japanese princess Takashi Yoshino, a midranking bureaucrat at the health ministry, will on Monday become the fifth chamberlain to Princess Aiko, the 2-year-old daughter of Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako, the Imperial Household Agency said.
The number of chamberlains to Princess Aiko was increased to five from four in April, though the agency said it took a while to select a suitable candidate. "From the beginning, we asked for a recommendation from the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry," said Hideki Hayashida, grand master of the Crown Prince's Household. "We have been informed that he is a wonderful person both in terms of his career and personality." In April 1983, Yoshino joined the old Health and Welfare Ministry, having graduated from the University of Tokyo. Yoshino's career at the ministry included a stint as assistant director of the accounting division and as planning officer on issues related to Japan's falling birthrate. The Imperial Household Agency hired a kindergarten teacher for Princess Aiko last month.
