Arctic research station sets up A team of 12 Chinese scientists will carry out research in the Arctic region at China's first Arctic scientific research station. The scientists will leave Beijing on Monday to spend two months at the station on Svalbard Island, Norway. They will open the station together with government officials and journalists, who are to set out in two teams this week. The station is a two-story building with a total area of 500 square meters. It has laboratories, offices, reading rooms, storerooms and dormitories that can accommodate 20 to 25 staff. There is also an observatory. Experts say the establishment of the station is important for China to improve its understanding about the impact of climate changes in the Arctic on other continents, Asia in particular. The scientists will carry out research on atmospheric physics, maritime life and meteorology. China launched two Arctic expeditions in 1999 and 2003, but had not set up a station.
