Legendary cook turns literary

A cook who shot to fame after scoring 630 points in a TOEFL exam, had published an autobiography, the Beijing Star Daily reported Monday.

Zhang Liyong, 29, signed and sold copies of his first book Sunday at the premiere for the book at the Beijing Book Building. The book, Legendary English-Speaking Cook, recounts his experiences learning English in difficult situations but the book is written in Chinese.

"Learning English is like brushing teeth," Zhang told those attending the premiere. "The most important thing is not the toothpaste or the toothbrush. It is perseverance."

Zhang said he was writing a second book, on how to learn English.

Zhang, who comes from a mountain village in Jiangxi Province, has worked in Guangzhou and Beijing for 10 years.

He quit high school in 1994 because his family could not afford his education, but he never stopped studying English.

He started work as a cook in Qinghua University in 1996, and became well-known throughout the university after he started serving food while speaking English.

Zhang made a name nationwide when he scored 630 at a TOEFL test earlier this year, only 40 points less than the full mark.
