HK companies registry sees 32% increase

In the first six months, 31,943 new local companies were registered in Hong Kong, up 32.26 percent on the same period last year, the Companies Registry of Hong Kong said Thursday.

The Companies Registry said that 7,152 overseas firms had established a place of business in Hong Kong at the end of June, an increase of 2.42 percent over the total number at the end of December 2003, while 363 new overseas companies were registered in the first six months of 2004, a decrease of 0.27 percent.

However, the total number of companies registered under the Companies Ordinance at the end of June was 506,563, an increase of 1.84 percent.

The number of charges on the assets of companies received in the first six months rose 51.35 percent to 14,663 while the number of satisfactions and releases received amounted to 9,867, an increase of 30.53 percent.

The number of documents received for filing during the first six months increased by 8.52 percent, to 807,104. The number of searches on records in microfiche and paper files made by the public increased by 3.83 percent, to 787,563.
