Red symbolizes happyness and good luck in Chinese custom. It has the same meaning in Xiamen city. Red paper is used in getepost couplets and invitation cards. The red paper also is put on the gift parcel. The cards used for wedding should be decorated with red and colourful stips. Birthday banner should be made of red silk. A piece of red cloth would be hung on the door after a beravement. But black, white and blue symbolize sadness.

The natives of Xiamen are fond of planting flowers and grass. They like to place potted plants and various kinds of flowers in the sitting room. The flowers are used to celebrate festivals and happy activities.

There are some taboos and customs in Xiamen:

1. Point one's middle finger at somebody is regarded impolite behavior.
2. It is a shame if someone is hit by broom.
3. It is impolite to sweep the floor when a guest is seated at one's home.
4. At wedding, it is unlucky to break bowls, dishes, plates or spoons.
5. Don't stick chopsticks in rice when having dinner with family and friends.
6. To advoid placing six dishes when guests have dinner at home.
7. Don't mention monkey before babies. It is said that it would make babies sick. And don't use the word "fat" to a baby, you should say he is good-looking.

Some of the taboos mentioned above are still followed, but most of them are out-of-day.
