China's largest zoo to open in "ice city"
China's largest zoo will open in September in the ice city of Harbin, capital of northeastern Heilongjiang Province. The Harbin Northern Forest Zoo, located 41 kilometers from Harbin city proper in the "Dove Cave" region, covers 848 hectares of land and is the largest of its kind in China. A total of 5,800 animals from 240 species, including Manchurian tiger, white tiger, wolf, cheetah, African elephant, polar bear, penguin, giant panda and rhinoceros, will live in the zoo. Research on wild animals will be conducted in the zoo, the sources said. To help the animals, especially those from tropical areas, adapt to Harbin's chilly winter, zoo keepers have equipped their pens with heating systems in accordance with their particular habits. |
