Men's basketball: Spain defeats China 92-76 for 7th place
Pau Gasol powered Spain to a 92-76 win over China to take the 7th place in the men's basketball tournament at the Athens Olympic Games on Saturday.
"It's really disappointed to finish with six wins and only one loss and finally being ranked 7th, as we did in Sydney," Gasol said. "I think we deserved at least the fifth place. The system sends us to this situation." Gasol shot 14-of-16 in the field and grabbed seven rebounds for Spain, who lost to the United States in quarter-final and the chance to vie for the title. Jorge Garbajosa scored 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting as the Spaniard beat the Chinese on almost every aspect on the court. "We are frustrated by the rankings because we lost only once. This system is not fair," Garbajosa said. China's best shooter Li Nan drilled in five 3-pointers to lead the team by 16 points. Houston Rockets' Yao Ming was held to four points in the second half for his 14 points and seven rebounds in 30:37 minutes. "Spain is a better team. They put on lot of pressure on Yao Ming, forcing us to commit turnovers," Li said. "But we have achieved what we were aiming at. We know we still have a long way to catch up the best teams in the world." |
