Man arrested for stabbing 25 pupils
A man accused of injuring 25 students of a local primary school was arrested in Juxian County in east China's Shandong Province, said police, Monday. Thirty-seven-year old bus driver Jia Qingyou stabbed 25 students with a kitchen knife and kidnapped a nine-year-old girl at the No. 1 Experimental Primary School at 7:10 a.m. Monday. The local police had successfully subdued the hijacker and rescued the hostage. The students were immediately hospitalized. The boys and girls mainly sustained wounds to their arms and faces and are all in stable condition. According to the preliminary interrogation, Jia fought with a resident surnamed Shen and was seeking revenge. Failing to find Shen, Jia attacked the children in the nearby school. Further investigation continues.
It was the third time in six weeks that a knife attack has been reported at a Chinese school or day care center. The earlier attacks left one child dead, injured a total of 42 people and caused widespread concern about school safety. In the worst recent school violence, an employee with a history of schizophrenia killed one student and slashed 14 others and three teachers on Aug. 4 at a Beijing kindergarten. In another recent attack, a 41-year-old man slashed 28 children at a day care center in the eastern city of Suzhou. Police said he was captured as he was preparing to ignite gasoline and homemade explosives. |
