Soccer player Cleonicio dos Santos Silva was shot and killed by thieves apparently trying to steal his car.

The 28-year-old striker for FC Zurich, also known as Renato, died Monday and was buried Tuesday, according to the Brazil Soccer Confederation.

Renato and his girlfriend were driving in Rio's Bangu neighborhood, one of the city's most violent areas, when gunmen tried to intercept his new car.

"He sped up when the bandits tried to stop him. Then they shot on him," the Brazil Soccer Confederation's Antonio Carlos Napoleao said. "One of the bullets hit Cleonicio in the head."

Renato's girlfriend also was shot, but the wound was superficial, according to a police report.

Renato, who joined the nine-time Swiss league champions after playing for Botafogo, is survived by his wife, Selmara, and son Pedro.
