A guangzhou court has sentenced 13 people to prison for trafficking in pornographic DVDs, with the ringleader sentenced to 19 years.

It was the biggest case against peddlers of pornographic films in China.

Another three were acquitted during the hearing at the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court, the Guangzhou Daily reported on Saturday.

Details of the other sentences were not available.

The gang was arrested after police found more than 6.23 million DVDs in raids last March. The number accounted for one third of the total smuggled DVDs which were intercepted from 1994 to 2002 in China.

Most of them, 4.4 million in total, were pornographic, and those that were not were illegally produced, the newspaper said.

The pirated discs were found in four warehouses in Guangzhou during a major campaign instigated by police in March to crack down on illegal publications.

Between August 2001 and March last year, Chen and his accomplices smuggled 3.8 million pornographic discs worth 0.68 yuan (US$0.082) each and an additional 7.5 million erotic discs worth 0.71 yuan each from overseas.

It said the group had made profits of more than 3.5 million yuan (US$423,000) from the sale of the smuggled DVDs.
