China's top legislature Wednesday afternoon approved the amendment to the
Electoral Law for the National People's Congress (NPC) and the Local People's
Congresses and the amendment to the Organic Law of the Local People's Congresses
and Governments at Various Levels.
The 12th meeting of the 10th NPC Standing Committee also passed the decision
stipulating that deputies of local congress at county and town levels across the
country should be elected in the same period from July 1 of 2006 to Dec. 31 of
2007.
According to the amendment of electoral law, preliminary election will be
adopted to select official candidates for local congress deputies from mass
nominees. It also sets stricter conditions for removal of congress deputies and
introduces tougher punishment on those cheating in the
election.
