(Agencies)
Updated: 2004-11-09 14:21

Security forces in Saudi Arabia shot dead a suspected militant on Tuesday in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah, witnesses said.

They said five security officers were lightly wounded when they stormed a residential building in the south east of the city and broke into the man's flat. Three people were also arrested in the building.

Officials were not immediately available to comment.

The witnesses said the raid took place at around 4 a.m. (0100 GMT) and that security forces had found explosives in the dead man's flat.

Saudi Arabia has been battling a wave of violence by supporters of Saudi-born Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network. Around 170 people, including foreigners, security forces and militants have been killed in attacks and clashes since the first suicide bombings in Riyadh 18 months ago.
