Beijing to host 2005 Johnnie Walker Classic golf
Beijing, the host for the 2008 Olympic Games, will be the venue for the 2005 Johnnie Walker Classic, event organisers said on Tuesday. The golf tournament, sanctioned by the European, Asian and Australasian tours, will be played from April 21 to 24. "We are very proud to host this event here in China in 2005," Hu Jian Guo, vice chairman of the China Golf Association, said in a statement. "It will give Chinese professional golfers the chance to compete alongside some of the best golfers in the world, and will showcase our strength in attracting and hosting world class events leading up to the Beijing Olympics in 2008." The Johnnie Walker Classic, first staged in Hong Kong in 1990, has been played in eight different Asian cities over 10 different golf courses in the past 14 years. Previous winners of the tournament include former world number ones Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods and Greg Norman.
