Peking and Tsinghua universities say no to condoms

Anti-AIDS promoters from a Beijing sub-district health bureau were refused
permission to distribute free condoms at Qinghua and Beijing universities
Tuesday, China News Service reported.

[Reuters] | The promoters, with 1,500 free condoms
for Beijing University and 1,000 for Qinghua, were to hold free AIDS
consultations on seven university campuses in Haidian District on Tuesday
morning.
However, the two elite universities refused the promoters to distribute the
condoms and decided to store them in the university hospitals instead.
Meanwhile, few students of the two universities took part in the AIDS
consultations. Administrators from Beijing University said they would consider
distributing the condoms at "proper time."
A spokesman for the health bureau said the promotion aimed to raise the
students' level of awareness of safe sex as some students had been diagnosed HIV
positive in universities in Beijing. Their identities were being kept
confidential to protect their privacy.
Meanwhile, the distribution of free condoms at the Central University of
Finance and Economics and another five universities fell short of demand.
Zhang Zesheng from Haidian District's disease control center said young
university students had a higher risk of contracting HIV if safe sex education
was not available to them.
