Smuggled chicken products destroyed in Guangdong

More than 210 tons of frozen chicken products from bird flu-hit areas of the United States were destroyed in Guangzhou's Panyu District on Wednesday.

The products mainly included chickens' feet, legs and wings possibly containing H5N1 and other bird flu viruses.

According to an official from the Anti-Smuggling Office of Panyu District government, the frozen chicken products were produced in bird flu-affected areas of the United States between 2002 and early this year.

The products, enough to fill 26 trucks, were seized as they were being smuggled into the mainland via Guangdong and Hong Kong waters this year, the anonymous official told China Daily yesterday.

Located at the mouth of the Pearl River, Panyu District used to be one of the major destinations in Guangdong for smuggled chicken and related products from the neighbouring Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and Southeast Asia, said the official.

Chicken is a popular food in Guangdong Province, and the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, particularly during the lunar New Year and other major Chinese festivals.

The Chinese Government banned the importing of chicken products from bird flu-hit countries and regions at the beginning of the year to prevent the disease from entering the mainland.

Impounded chicken products will either be destroyed or returned to their places of origin.
