Coach: Liu can break world record in 2006

Chinese Olympic champion Liu Xiangcan break the men's 110 meters hurdles world record in 2006, his coach Sun Haiping said Tuesday in Beijing.

Liu, 21, became the first Chinese man to win a track and field gold medal in the high hurdles with a world record-tying time of 12.91 seconds.

The Shanghai-born Liu also clocked a season's third fastest time of 13.06 seconds in May, only behind his own Olympic gold winning time and four-time world champion Allen Johnson's 13.05.

"If he maintains such a good form, I believe Liu will have a serious chance to break the world record in 2006," Sun said.

Sun said Liu's aim in 2005 is to keep his time between 13 and 13.10 seconds.

But Liu said that it will be very difficult to break the 11-year-old world mark, which was set by Britain's Collin Jackson in 1993.

"It is easier to run inside 14 seconds, but very difficult to break the barrier of 13 seconds," he said
