Australian-born media magnate Rupert Murdoch is building a home near the Forbidden City in Beijing.

The News Corporation executive chairman was building the house on property he bought in the Chinese capital's political and diplomatic area, Britain's Daily Telegraph website said today.

Quoting Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, a paper once owned by the media mogul, it said Mr Murdoch is building a large house in the siheyuan courtyard style, deemed to embody Confucian thought.

The 2000sq m home will have two storeys underground and will be built from traditional grey bricks and roof tiles, including some from a former house on the site.

Mr Murdoch is also in the process of buying a new residence in New York's Fifth Ave.

News Corporation declined to comment on the Beijing property but it would make sense for Mr Murdoch and his third wife, Wendi Deng, who was born in the city of Xuzhou where her father was a factory manager.

Ms Deng worked at Mr Murdoch's Hong Kong-based Star pay-TV operation and is believed to advise him on Chinese matters.

Star is News Corporation's long-term bet on the Chinese market, amid signs the Beijing leadership is getting more comfortable with foreign media ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
