Chinese cycling seeks further breakthrough
If Chinese cycling expects further breakthrough at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, some advantage events should be focused with special attention, the Chinese Cycling Association (CCA) chief said in Beijing Monday. Speaking at a national conference for strategies for the Beijing Games four years away, CCA president Cai Jiadong said that the Olympic silver medal performance by Chinese cyclist Jiang Yonghua in Athens is a historic breakthrough for China. But he is far from being satisfied. "Chinese cycling is still far behind world cycling powers. So special attention should be paid to some key events in an well planned way," he said. Chinese cyclists won an Olympic silver medal, a world championship title, six World Cup titles and 32 intercontinental titles between 2001 and 2004, which is the first stage of a CCA eight-year program, Cai said. China did well at such events as the Asian Games in Busan and Olympic Games in Athens. China can not expect an overall high-level development in the near future, so it has to work out a well-schemed plan to focus on some key events, by making the best use of all available resources. Women's track sprint events, especially 500 meters time trial, could be one of disciplines where Chinese could yield good results in the Beijing games, Cai predicted. Adjustment and reforms shall be done to improve competitive sports and more efforts should be made in the fight against dopingas well, the CCA chief stressed. |
