Southampton reject China captain Zheng
China captain Zheng Zhi has been told by Southampton manager Harry Redknapp he is not what the club is looking for, following a seven-day trial. "You could see he was a good player, but he was not quite what we were looking for," Xinhua news agency cited Redknapp as saying of the Shenzhen star. "The position we are in, we are looking for somebody who can come in and do a job, we really need someone with premiership experience." Southampton are struggling second from bottom of the Premiership, collecting just 13 points from 18 games. Redknapp, who took over as the Saints boss this month, said that he needs five players in the January transfer window but ruled out looking overseas. "I would rather get players that have played here rather than go abroad at the moment, that is a big gamble," he said. Zheng had earlier had a trial with German Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin, but they too decided not to take him on. |
