Chinese President Hu Jintao said Saturday at a New Year tea party that China will strive to resolve the Taiwan issue peacefully with the greatest sincerity and utmost efforts.

"But we absolutely cannot allow anyone or any force to separate Taiwan from China by any means," Hu said at a party held in Beijing by the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). He urged the CPPCC to unify the Chinese compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, overseas Chinese and friends both at home and abroad to promote global campaigns against any attempt to separate Taiwan from the motherland.

Hu said in the new year the Chinese government will stick to its consistent and clear policy toward Taiwan, namely the basic principle of peaceful reunification and "one country, two systems," and the eight-point proposal on promoting the development of the cross-Straits relations and maintain the stability of the Straits area.

He called for resuming cross-Straits talks and negotiation based on the one-China principle as early as possible, but said China will never tolerate any attempt to separate Taiwan.

"The Chinese government and people will firmly safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity," Hu said.

China to provide aid for tsunami-hit countries

Hu said at the reception that the Chinese government and Chinese people are willing to "provide any possible aid in its capacity" for the tsunami-affected countries.

"We deeply sympathize with the victims' families and give our cordial regards to them and their countries that suffered a great loss in last Sunday's tsunami," Hu said.

China is willing to help and sincerely wishes its neighboring countries would soon recover from the disaster, Hu added.

Hu's comments came one day after China announced it will add anadditional 500 million yuan (US$60.46 million) of humanitarian aid to the tsunami-hit countries.

Work agenda for 2005 outlined

Hu said that the year of 2005 will be of crucial importance for China in its drive to "build a relatively prosperous society" in face of opportunities and challenges arising from both domesticand international fields.

After reviewing China's social and economic achievements in the past year, Hu said that "we are faced with opportunities that need to be tightly grasped and challenges to be seriously handled" under the conditions that China's social and economic development has entered a crucial stage and profound changes are undergoing inthe international arena.

"In the new year, we shall continue to strengthen and improve macro-economic control, speed up reform and opening up process forthe transformation of mode of economic expansion, so as to maintain fast and healthy development of national economy," Hu said.

He pledged to advance socialist democracy by upholding the leadership of the Party, ensuring that the people have the final say on state affairs under the principle of rule of law. "Our socialist democracy shall be further expanded and the socialist legal framework better composed."

For the building of a harmonious society, the Communist Party of China and the government shall function by the mandate of the people, empathize with the feelings of the people, work for the well-being of the people, do its best to solve difficulties of thepeople and properly handle various conflicting interests in the society, the president said.

"The CPC is built for the public and exercises the state power for the people," Hu stressed. The Party shall launch a nationwide campaign to educate its members for the improvement of its ruling capacity.
