Israel kills 8 Palestinians in north Gaza

Israeli soldiers shot dead eight Palestinians in north Gaza on Tuesday after mortar fire from Palestinian militants wounded two people in a nearby Jewish settlement, medics on both sides said.

Palestinian witnesses said Israeli tanks fired into the Palestinian town of Beit Lahiya shortly after the mortars crashed into Nissanit settlement. The identities of the dead were not immediately known.

An injured boy is wheeled into the al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, following shelling by Israeli forces in the Beit Lahiya area, to the north of Gaza City. Eight Palestinians were killed by tank shelling during an Israeli army incursion in the area. [AFP]

Israeli medics in Nissanit said the mortar bombs landed near a bus filled with children, lightly injuring two adult escorts.

The Israeli army had no immediate comment.

The violence erupted a day after Israel ended an armored incursion into Beit Hanoun and Jabalya in north Gaza in another effort to eliminate rocket and mortar squads who constantly fire toward settlers and areas over the nearby border in Israel.

One Palestinian militant was killed in Monday's fighting.
