A nine-year-old boy in Vietnam who was suspected of contracting bird flu, which killed 32 people in Asia last year, has died, a doctor said Wednesday.

The boy from southern Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh was admitted to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City early Tuesday morning and died later that day, hospital deputy director Tran Tinh Hien said.

"Our initial test showed that he contracted flu type A," he said "We are still conducting further test to determine whether he got H5N1 virus."

The final test results are expected later Wednesday, he said.

The boy ate a sick chicken last week and developed a high fever and a serious lung infection, said Le Hai Au, director of the Tra Vinh provincial Preventive Medicine Center.

"He has all the clinical symptoms of bird flu," he said

None of the boy's family members has similar symptoms, Au said.

The hospital is also treating a 16-year-old girl from southern Dong Thap province who tested positive for the H5N1 strain of bird flu.

The girl is still in critical condition and breathing with a respirator since she was admitted to the hospital last week, Hien said.

Vietnam has reported the recurrence of bird flu outbreaks in several southern provinces in recent months. Nam Dinh was the first province in the north to report the recurrence last month.

Cooler temperatures and an increase in the movement of poultry ahead of Lunar New Year in early February favors the spread of the virus, animal health officials have warned.
