A passenger bus collided with a trailer-truck, killing 27 people including 10 children, and wounding another 17 in northern Colombia, police said.

The bus driver, Libardo Barrero, said he was trying to pass another vehicle Saturday night when he collided with the trailer coming from the opposite directions, General Hipolito Herrera, police commander of Santander province, told The Associated Press. Barrero suffered serious injuries.

"It appears to be due to a lack of prudence on the part of the bus driver," said Herrera, adding that the driver will be arrested. The crash occurred some 400 kilometres northeast of Bogota.

Television images showed several bodies, vehicle parts and bus seats strewn across the highway. All of the fatalities were passengers on the bus.

The truck driver survived with serious injuries.
