German footballer admits taking money

The captain of SC Paderborn has admitted accepting money before a German Cup match which is at the centre of a high-profile match-fixing scandal.

The club said yesterday that Dutchman Thijs Waterink took 10,000 Euros from an unidentified man shortly before the team's tie against Hambury SV on the understanding he could keep the money if his side won.

It is the first time a player has been implicated in this widening scandal.

The scandal came to light when four referees tipped off authorities about possibly suspicious activities by Robert Hoyzer.

The 25-year-old referee later admitted a charge of match-fixing and hinted the existence of an underground gambling group.

German prosecutors are investigating the country's biggest sports corruption scandal in 30 years.
