be announced on Sunday, the Election Commission said. Allawi traveled to
northern Iraq on Saturday to meet Jalal Talabani, leader of one of two
main Kurdish parties, in the hope of striking a deal with the powerful
Kurdish bloc. [Reuters] | The final vote tally had been expected earlier in the week but was delayed
while ballot boxes were checked for signs of tampering.
Partial results so far show an alliance of mainly Shi'ite Islamist groups far
in the lead, as expected, with a coalition of the two main Kurdish parties
second and a bloc led by interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi
third.
