A US Marine was killed on Saturday in a military operation south of Baghdad, the US military said on Sunday.

"A Marine assigned to the First Marine Expeditionary Force was killed in action on Feb. 26 while conducting security and stability operations in Babil Province," the military said in a statement.

The area, located just south of Baghdad and dubbed the "triangle of death", includes Latifiyah, Iskandriyah, Mahmoudiyah and Musayyib where insurgents are active.

More than 1,480 US servicemen have been killed in Iraq since the US-led invasion of the country in March 2003.
