16 dead in Heilongjiang mine blast (Xinhua) Updated: 2005-03-15 15:48
Rescue workers have found one miner alive and 16 bodies at the site of an
explosion that happened Monday morning at a coal mine in Qitaihe City, northeast
China's Heilongjiang Province.

mine safety, which is described as a "top priority" by Chinese
Premier Wen Jiabao, should be improved as soon as possible with a
great number of miners' lives
unassured. | Information from the Rescue
Headquarters of Qitaihe Coal Mine Mishap said the blast occurred at about 11:00
a.m. at Xinfu Coal Pit of Qitaihe Coal Industry Clean Coal Group, trapping 19
miners underground.
There are now still two miners missing. The rescue operation isstill going
on, and the cause of the explosion is under investigation.
