Traffic accidents became the No. 1 cause of death for primary and middle school students in China last year, killing 4,423 and injuring 20,917, according to official sources.

The Ministry of Education, Ministry of Public Security and other government departments, launched an education drive Sunday to teach students to obey traffic rules and regulations and guard against any possible traffic accidents. Students have received leaflets and handbooks on the subject.

March 28 is the 10th national day for security education on primary and middle school students, which was initiated in 1996. It falls on Monday of the last week of March each year.
