Kidd and McGrady nab NBA weekly honors
New Jersey Nets guard Jason Kidd and Houston Rockets guard Tracy McGrady were selected as the NBA's top players for the week ending April 17.
Kidd earned the Eastern Conference award by averaging a triple-double for three games last week, as the Nets posted a 2-1 record and moved into a tie for the eighth and final playoff spot with Cleveland. Should the Nets and Cavaliers finish tied, New Jersey would claim the final playoff berth. The veteran averaged 18.3 points, 12.3 rebounds and 10.0 assists last week. He notched his league-high eighth triple-double of the season and the 67th of his career on Sunday against Philadelphia with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 16 assists in a 104-83 victory. Kidd is the third different Net to win Player of the Week this season, joining Richard Jefferson and Vince Carter. McGrady already has his team in the Western Conference playoffs and led the Rockets to a 3-0 mark last week with wins against Seattle, Memphis and Denver -- all teams headed to the post-season. He averaged a conference-high 31.0 points on 48.4 percent shooting with 7.0 rebounds and 6.7 assists. On April 11, he scored 38 points with 11 rebounds in a 90-78 win at Seattle and capped his week on Saturday with a 32-point effort that included a 6-for-7 performance from three-point range in a 115-87 rout of Denver. This is McGrady's fourth Player of the Week award for the season. He was also honored for the weeks of January 10-16, January 31-February 6, and March 7-13. Others nominated for this week's award included Boston's Paul Pierce, Denver's Andre Miller, Detroit's Ben Wallace, Miami's Dwyane Wade, Philadelphia's Allen Iverson, Washington's Antawn Jamison, and Joe Johnson and Amare Stoudemire of Phoenix.
