Actor Brandon Routh stars as Superman in the new film from Warner Bros. Pictures' titled "Superman Returns" in this undated publicity photograph. The film is expected to be released in June 2006.
Complete with his trademark spandex suit, Superman returns, in the form of pumped up actor Brandon Routh.

The new look superhero is set to hit cinemas in June 2006 after a mysterious absence of several years.

The Man of Steel will be back to face a new chapter of action adventures and heartbreak.

As an old enemy plots to render him powerless, Superman battles to win back the love of his life, Lois Lane.

Directed by Bryan Singer, Superman Returns boasts an all-star cast including Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey and James Marsden alongside newcomer Routh.

Singer, who replaced the X-Men's fluorescent spandex suits with dark, leather-esque uniforms, chose to keep Superman "classic".

Rather than reinvent his appearance, he wanted to remain faithful to previous incarnations, from the Max Fleischer cartoons of the 1940s right through to the Christopher Reeve movies of the 1970s and 1980s.

Fans will be pleased to note that despite slight changes, the cape, blue body suit and red tights remain intact.

But it is Routh who completes the costume and body is power, claims Singer.

"I always had the general idea of the suit. However, when the conceptual art was evolving around the same time that I cast Brandon, I privately had paintings rendered with Brandon's face, which certainly brought it to life," he told USA Today
