China to launch ambitious wind power development

China plans to develop an advanced wind power system by 2010 with a generating capacity of 4 million kw, said Xu Dingming, a senior official with the State Development and Reform Committee (SDRC).

China has established 43 wind power plants nationwide with 1,300 installed wind power generating sets. However, the country's installed wind power generating capacity stands merely at 760,000 kw, said Xu, director of the SDRC energy bureau, at a wind power conference on Tuesday.

China has rich wind resources and a huge potential for wind power development. The SDRC will likely prioritize wind power development and plans to enhance the country's installed wind power generating capacity to 4 million kw by 2010, and increase it to 20 million kw by 2020.
