Orlando Magic all-star Grant Hill beat out league MVP Steve Nash for the National Basketball Association's Sportsmanship Award, the league announced.

After edging out Shaquille O'Neal for the MVP award, Phoenix's Nash took a backseat to forward Hill in sportsmanship balloting.

Hill received 134 first-place votes and 2,778 points to finish ahead of Nash, who got 63 first-place votes and 2,370 points.

The award is a consolation prize for Hill, who recovered from numerous ankle injuries and averaged 19.7 points in 67 games for the Magic this season but was unable to take them to the playoffs.

Designed to honour a player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court, the award was voted on by NBA players for the second straight year.
