Rescuers rush to save miners
LONGYAN, Fujian Province: Rescuers were still battling to save 12 miners trapped when water flooded a mine on Saturday in Longyan, East China's Fujian Province. The incident happened at 9:30 am, when some miners in the Chikeng coal mine in Xinluo District allegedly dug into some abandoned holes which were full of water, said Liao Changfu, a local official in Xinluo District. Further investigations are ongoing. Fourteen miners were working underground when the pit was flooded. Two working near the exit escaped. "It is not clear whether the 12 trapped are alive or not," said Liao, who, along with more than 300 rescue workers, is aiming to get to the tunnels as soon as the water is pumped out. Liao said four miners who were working in the upper tunnel may survive, but hopes were dim for the other eight, who are feared drowned. New vents have been put in to get air to those trapped and 12 pumps have been removing water from the pit. It is the first accident in the 14-year history of the Chikeng coal mine, which produces 30,000 tons a year. The coal mine has complete operation licences and employs more than 40 miners.
