China launches Olympic volunteer program

China began its Olympic volunteer program Sunday for the 2008 Beijing Games, with organizers hoping to attract about 70,000 people.

The volunteers will help with translation, transportation, security, medical services and cultural activities. They will be recruited mostly from Beijing universities but also from other Chinese cities hosting events, as well as residents from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, organizers said.

"It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience," International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said. "They have one ideal: to promote the Olympic values and to prepare the best conditions for the athletes of the world to compete in a fair and peaceful competition."
