"Bewitched" | Batman beat back Nicole Kidman's film
"Bewitched" to stay at the top of the North American box office for a
second weekend in a row, final figures showed.
However, the
superhero flick could not rescue Hollywood from a continued slump in
ticket sales.
"Batman Begins," the fifth film based on the comic book hero, made 27.5 million
dollars and has earned 122.5 million since its release two weeks ago,
according to California-based box office trackers Exhibitor Relations Co.
Inc.
"Bewitched," based on the popular 1960s television sitcom about the star-crossed
marriage between a winsome
witch and her mortal husband, grossed 20.1 million dollars in its opening
weekend.
The action film "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," starring Angelina Jolie and Brad
Pitt as a wife-and-husband team of assassins, was third with 16.8 million
dollars.
Walt Disney's "Herbie: Fully Loaded," starring teen star Lindsay Lohan
in the revival of the 1970s film featuring a free-thinking Volkswagen
beetle car, debuted in the fourth spot with 12.7 million dollars.
The horror flick " George A. Romero's Land of the Dead," the fourth
installment of director Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" series, opened
in fifth place with 10.2 million dollars.
The animated film "Madagascar" was sixth with 7.4 million dollars,
followed by the sci-fi saga "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the
Sith," which earned 6.1 million, and the remake of the American football
film "The Longest Yard," which took in 5.5 million.
The kid-flick "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D" came in
ninth with 3.49 million dollars, followed by Russell Crowe's boxing drama
"Cinderella Man" with 3.44 million.
The top 12 films earned a combined 117.6 million dollars over the
weekend, down 15 percent from the 138.4 million dollars made by the 12
highest earners during the same period a year ago.
It was the 18th straight weekend showing marked by a drop in earnings
compared to the previous year.
