China promotes Mekong subregion cooperation
Assistant Foreign Minster Shen Guofang says China has been playing an
important part in promoting economic cooperation in the Mekong River basin.
China has also trained 1500 technical specialists for these countries. In addition, experts in Thailand urge Mekong leaders to give environmental concerns priority when they meet in China next Monday. The two-day meeting will discuss increased cooperation on economic and environmental issues affecting the Mekong River basin. The 4,661-kilometer Lancang-Mekong River runs through China, Myanmar, Laos,
Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The 2,160-kilometer section in China is known as
the Lancang River, and traverses southwest China's Yunnan Province.

Shen Guofang revealed China has funded a navigation course improvement project along the Lancang-Mekong River. The government has conducted various kinds of agricultural cooperation with other countries in the region.
