A regular train crashed into an express train from behind as the express train was stopped on the tracks, local TV and radio reports said. Both trains were reportedly on their way from the West Java town of Bogor to Jakarta.

Witnesses were quoted as saying the accident occurred in the Rawa Bambu area of South Jakarta at around 4:05 p.m.

Officials at the Pasar Rebo Hospital, where most of the victims were rushed, said they received 52 victims -- three of them were dead -- from the accident.

It was not immediately clear how accident occurred.
