Kidnap insurance offered for Beijing millionaires

The rich know the arts of making money, and the insurers now want a slice of their fortune by offering them a promise - you are insured in case you or your family members are kidnapped.

A girl is saved and taken away by police officers after being kidnapped in suburbs of Shanghai on May 8, 2005. A man from Central China's Hunan Province held a girl hostage near a supermarket and forced the girl's father to drive his car to run away. Police officers succeeded in saving the girl by taking actions four hours later after efforts of negotiation failed. [newsphoto]

It is the first of such insurance products in Beijing. Similar products were introduced by American International Underwriters Insurance Company (AIU) last year in cities as Guangzhou, Foshan, and Shenzhen in Guangdong, Shanghai Municipality.

It is reported the insurance was well received in those cities, and now Minsheng Life jumped onto the bandwagon, offering similar products to Beijing millionaires.

Under the insurance policy now available for the rich people in Beijing by Minsheng Life, an annual amount of 500 yuan in premium will secure a guarantee of 797,500 yuan, according to the Beijing Morning Post.

The new product, called "Minsheng comprehensive family insurance for enterprisers" and launched in Beijing June 30, aims to serve civil enterprisers and middle to high-ranked managers from public services enterprises.

The price of the new product is lower than those of similar kinds of insurances. The insurance period is one year and renewal is allowed afterward.

Currently, the maximum coverage of most other kidnap insurances is around 1.5 milion yuan (with premium totaling 3,000 yuan).

It provides protection not only to the policyholders but also their spouses and kids. The clients can choose a combination of products to insure their spouses and kids from accidental injury, traffic accident and kidnapping.

All these can be done in one insurance contract to cover the whole household.

It is believed that China has at least 3 million millionaires, with the majority of middle and high-ranked managers, according to Minsheng Life.
