Boston Celtics NBA player Gary Payton (C) arrives with his family
lawyer Craig Gilbert (R) for a court appearance to face assault charges in
Toronto July 6, 2005.[Reuters] | Adrian Cimpean,
31, told the court that Boston Celtics' Payton, Sam Cassell of the Minnesota
Timberwolves and free agent Jason Caffey, punched and kicked him after he tried
to defend his wife, who is also a stripper, from insults.
Payton and Cassell were in a Toronto court on Wednesday, but Caffey is not
expected to attend, according to his lawyer.
The three basketball players, who have pleaded not guilty, were charged in
April 2003 after an altercation outside the downtown strip club with Cimpean,
his wife Vida Asante, and the club's security guard, Craig Broda.
Cimpean said the three players called to his wife and insulted her, and he
was attacked when he told them to leave her alone. He suffered cuts on his left
ear and right eyelid and bruises on both shoulders.
Since then, he said, he has had a ringing sensation in one ear, he is often
depressed and feels insecure.
When asked by defense lawyer Edward Greenspan why he never mentioned the
injuries to the police during the investigation, Cimpean said he thought they
would go away.
