Highs and lows have taught Phelps a lesson

Two things happened to Michael Phelps last year that changed his life forever.

Michael Phelps

The first was at the Athens Olympics where he won six gold and two bronze medals to establish himself as the world's greatest all-round swimmer.

The second, just a few months later, happened at Salisbury in Maryland, but there were no medals and no cheering crowds this time.

Phelps was arrested and charged with drink-driving when he jumped behind the wheel of his car after a college party. He could have gone to prison but escaped with 18 months' probation.

The two incidents represented the highest and lowest points of his life but combined to make him a more balanced person.
