[Reuters] | A goal midway through the first half
from Giedrius Barevicius gave the Premier League side the wake-up call they
needed.
Rafa Benitez's side were behind for only six minutes as French striker
Djibril Cisse reacted quickly to a knock down from his partner Peter Crouch to
hook home. Three minutes later Jamie Carragher headed in Steven Gerrard's
corner, his first goal for six years, and the threat from Kaunas evaporated.
Gerrard made and scored the third goal nine minutes after halftime,
converting a penalty.
"It was a difficult game but in the end it's a good result for us," Benitez
said. "We had the game under control, we made one mistake but we had many
chances."
Security was high in Nicosia where Cypriot side
Anorthosis Famagusta scored twice in the final seven minutes to secure a
historic 3-1 victory over Turkey's Trabzonspor.
