India says closer US ties won't distance China

While trade between the two fast-growing economies has since helped rebuild India's ties with China, New Delhi's military and diplomatic links with the United States have also blossomed.

Leaders from the latter pairing have hailed common democratic traditions, and in June Indian Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld signed a "New Framework for U.S.-India Defense Relations."

The framework envisages greater cooperation in defense production and research, exchange of military technologies, more military exercises and training exchanges between the large armed forces of both nations.

India's biggest communist party has said the pact should be "thrown into the dustbin."

As India and United States work together on multiple fronts -- including New Delhi looking to buy U.S military aircraft and the anti-missile Patriot system -- analysts say Singh should strike a strategic balance.
