Help sought for abandoned panda cub (AFP) Updated: 2005-08-11 07:51
Researchers have called for help to save the life of a newborn male panda cub
abandoned by his mother in favor of his twin sister in Northwest China's Shaanxi
Province, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Giant panda 'Xue
Xue' keeps newly born 'Da Xing', the elder female twin, in her arms in a
wildlife salvage center in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, Wednesday,
Aug. 9, 2005. [Xinhua] | The male cub and his
sister were born in captivity Saturday at the Shaanxi Wild Animal Rescue and
Research Center to 18-year-old giant panda Xue Xue.
Pandas usually nurture only one cub, and as the male weighed in at just 122
grams (just over four ounces) against his sister's more robust 151 grams, he was
immediately abandoned by his mother, Xinhua said.
Researchers at the center intervened to try to save the male cub and have
asked experts from as far away as Southwest China's Sichuan province to assist
them in the effort.
The notoriously undersexed giant panda is an endangered species, with only
about 1,590 of them living in the wild, all in China. Around 160 have been
raised in captivity.
