Suspected Taliban militants opened fire on a vehicle in southern Afghanistan, wounding three civilians, an official said Tuesday.

The rebels who launched the attack on Monday night near Qalat, the capital of Zabul province, probably mistook it for a government vehicle, said Ali Khail, spokesman for the provincial governor.

The wounded men, all Afghans, were being treated at Qalat hospital. Two were in stable condition, but the other was seriously hurt, he said.

Zabul is a hotbed for Taliban-led rebels opposed to the U.S.-backed Afghan government and the presence of coalition forces. The U.S. military said Monday that it had killed 65 suspected militants in fighting in the province earlier this month.

Also late Monday, Afghan police in Zabul's Shahre Safa district arrested two suspected Taliban who confessed to involvement in attacks on government forces, said district chief Ghulam Rasool. The suspects were handed to coalition forces, he said.
