LIVERPOOL, England C China international midfielder Li Tie wants to ensure that he does not suffer another recurrence of the leg injury that has kept him out of first-team action for English Premiership side Everton for the past 18 months.

Li has not appeared in a competitive fixture for the Everton first team since suffering a horrific shin injury in training with the China national team in February 2004. His attempted comeback in January during a reserve match against Bolton Wanderers came to a premature end following a hard challenge on the same shin.

Li now appears to have fully recovered and has recently appeared in pre-season and reserve matches for the Merseyside club. However, the 27-year-old is understandably cautious about protecting himself against another relapse of the injury.

I had not played for 18 months and from a physical point of view my ankle is the weakest position of my injured leg, said Li to the Daily Post newspaper.

But it's really getting better and better. After the seven matches I have played since the beginning of this season, I am very happy with the improvement.

I still have to be very careful during the match. I try my best to avoid the strike if unnecessary. When you are not totally fit for the match that is the easiest way to be injured, so it involves a lot of concentration.

Li has not been named in the Everton squad for their first two Premier League matches of the season against Manchester United and Bolton Wandererers. However, he was an unused substitute for the first leg of the UEFA Champions League qualifier against Spanish side Villareal two weeks ago and could feature in Wednesdays return match due to an injury crisis at Everton.
