Fujian province issues alert for typhoon Talim

China, which faces Taiwan Province on the opposite site of the Taiwan Straits,
issued an urgent alert Wednesday as typhoon Talim hurtledtoward Taiwan.
It is expected to later hit the Chinese coastal mainland.
The center of typhoon Talim was 340 kilometers southeast of Taiwan's northern
tip at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, packing gusts of up to 216 kph, according to the
provincial observatory.
Moving northwest at a speed of 20-25 kilometers an hour, Talim is expected to
land on Taiwan Wednesday night and will slam into Fujian by Thursday if it
continues to move along its present path.
Local residents were told to prepare for the typhoon, which will bring strong
winds and downpours in many localities, according to weather forecasts.
Southeastern China's coastal regions have suffered in typhoon Haitang and
Matsa and many tropical storms during this year's typhoon season, which lasts
from early summer to late autumn.
