Israel aims to pull troops out of the occupied Gaza Strip by September 15 following the evacuation of Jewish settlers from the territory, Israeli security sources said on Thursday.

They did not give details of exactly how the withdrawal and the handover to the Palestinians would take place.

"We plan to leave Gaza by September 15," said one.

The pullout is the first time that Israel has given up settlements on land that Palestinians want for a state.
