Gunmen drove up to a crowd of labourers waiting for work and shot dead two
and wounded 13 in the New Baghdad district of the Iraqi capital on Friday
morning, police said.
"The labourers were gathered at their meeting place when two cars drove up at
7.30 am (0330 GMT)," a police source said. "They opened fire on the crowd."
On Wednesday a suicide bomb attack on a crowd of day labourers killed at
least 114. It was the bloodiest incident on a day which saw over 150 killed in
as many as 14 separate attacks.
On Thursday at least 24 police were killed in two bombings.
Iraq's Sunni Arab minority is waging an insurgency against the Shi'ite and
Kurdish-led Iraqi government and its U.S. backers.
Violence has intensified in the run-up to an October 15 referendum on a new
constitution for Iraq which Sunni Arabs, long the dominant force in Iraq, fear
will entrench the loss of influence they have experienced since the
war.
