China on verge of quarterfinals at U-17 worlds Asian champion China edged host Peru 1-0 at the FIFA Under-17 World Championship on Monday to put itself on the verge of reaching the quarter-finals. Deng Zhuoxiang struck the only goal of the game after just 13 minutes at Trujillo as the Chinese picked up all three points, moving to the top of Group A with four points after two matches. The Chinese performance was marred by the dismissal of goalkeeper Wang Dalei in injury time at the end of the game as he was shown his second yellow card of the match. However, with Ghana drawing 1-1 with Costa Rica in the day's other Group A match, the Asian champion only needs a draw in its final game against Ghana to book a spot in the last eight. While China is looking good for a place in the knockout stage, the world championship has virtually ended for Australia, who will join the AFC in January. The Australians suffered their second straight loss, going down 3-0 to Mexico, to be knocked out of contention for the quarter-finals. Mexico advances from Group B along with Turkey, who beat Uruguay 3-2 on Monday.
