'We're not like New Orleans': official (AFP) Updated: 2005-09-25 08:25
While Damrey may not be as powerful as Rita, the 11th storm of the season was
packing sustained winds of up to 105 kilometres (66 miles) per hour at its
centre, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.
Officials in Hainan and the nearby province of Fujian were not taking any
chances.
Hainan Saturday called all fishing boats back to port, Wu said. In Fujian,
7,091 boats had returned to harbour and some 121,000 people, mostly fishermen
and fish farmers living in coastal areas, had been evacuated to safe areas as of
Friday, media reportes said.
Officials said there will be none of the chaos seen in New Orleans after
Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast city earlier this month.
"It's a matter of mindset. In the United States, people were warned, but they
didn't think it would be so bad, but in coastal areas in China, everyone knows
to take typhoon warnings seriously," said Wang.
East and southeast China are prone to tropical storms
and typhoons, which have pummeled the country by the dozens over the past 50
years.
